“Promises, Promises” by Liz Johnson

It’s wonderful to be back to share about my second story in A Cup of Christmas Cheer collection from Guideposts Books. I’m thrilled to have both a contemporary and an historical story in this collection.

069 010The setting:
“Promises, Promises” takes place in small-town Iowa, where everyone knows everyone else’s business—except for one wife, who can’t figure out what her husband is doing.

The story:
Despite a promise he made when he proposed, after thirty-one years of marriage, Susanna’s husband is strangely absent from the holiday festivities this year. Intent on finding the source of his distraction, she instead discovers a Christmas truth more heartwarming than she ever imagined.

The inspiration:
A few years ago, I saw a picture of two bicycles up to their handlebars in snow. A picture of snow crashing from a roof after a slammed door immediately jumped to mind. What would make someone so angry that she’d slam a door hard enough to set loose an avalanche? And that’s where I came up with the idea of a wife who wants to know why her husband has checked out of the Christmas festivities.

The takeaway:
After reading this story, I hope readers will remember the importance of keeping the promises they make and not jumping to conclusions when someone else isn’t keeping theirs.

Christmas traditions:
When I was a teenager, my mom took me to the mall, and we chose two file7571234131799paper angels from the Angel Tree, a little boy and a little girl. And then we shopped for their Christmas gifts. Every year since then, we’ve shopped for children in need. Whether it’s filling a shoebox for Operation Christmas Child or packing plastic bins with treats for orphans, sharing gifts with kids who wouldn’t otherwise have any has been one of the most wonderful parts of Christmas for the last twenty years.

Your turn:
What’s your favorite holiday festivity to share with family?

  1. Liz, I love how a simple picture can spark a story idea! And very neat about your family tradition to fill boxes for kids in need. Sounds like you were blessed with amazing parents!
